Tips & Tricks: Removing Themes in s60v3

I'll move on to the first "Tips & Tricks" installment of my blog. Every so often I will provide what I hope to be some useful information that will help you get the most out of your s60 3rd device. I'll also try to cover some of the topics that I see constantly questioned on the forum over at mobile**** and elsewhere. One such topic is a problem that appears to be common to all s60 3rd devices.

Many people have experienced a bug where they will install a theme on their device but when they try to remove it using the Application Manager there is no entry for it. I still see this problem on the latest N80IE firmware and on newer firmware for other devices as well. Don't despair though, as long as you install your themes to your memory card there is an easy way to remove those unwanted themes.

1. Connect your device to your PC in 'Mass storage' mode - or insert your Mini SD card into a card reader and connect it to your PC.

2. Once your PC recognizes your card a new drive will appear under 'My Computer'. Open it, and browse to private10207114import.

3. Browse through each of the folders in this directory to find the theme you would like to remove. The MBM, MIF, and SKN files in each folder should each be named after the theme - so if you want to remove a theme called "MyTheme", look for "MyTheme.mbm" etc.

*Note that you may see some MBM/MIF/SKN files named simply "themepackage.mbm" etc. In this case, simply open the SKN file in Notepad and you will see the actual theme name in the first few lines of text.



4. Once you've found the folder containing the theme files you'd like to remove, simply delete the contents of the folder (don't delete the folder itself).

Now put your card back in your phone you'll notice that the theme is no longer listed under themes and you've freed up some space on your memory card.

Some times it happens that you forgot the password of your memory card and you have lots of your important data in your phone.

So there are two types of methods for recovering the password of your memory card with the help of nokia phone.


For Nokia s60 1st and 2nd edition phones.

1. First Install FExplorer in your phone memory.

2. Got to drive C: , you will find a file called mmcstore

3. Send it to your pc directly and open it in notepad or rename the file.

4. At the end of the file you will find your password.

For Nokia S60 3rd Phones, Nokia N-Series and Nokia E-Series

There is almost no way yet known to hack the memory card password in case of these types of phone but there is a way to do it some of the s60 3rd edition phones and almost all the E-series phones.

The remote lock option in E-Series phone allws you to unlock your phone by sending a sms.

The only thing you have to do is to activate this feature by going to Tools | Settings | Security | Phone and SIM | Allow remote lock menu. The password of your memory card will be your remote lock message.

So you have to just send a sms containing your remote lock message that will automatically change your memory card passsword.

Method : Flight mode: Put your phone in "Flight mode" with Psiloc System Tools. Install System Tools, open it and select "Flight mode". This way you can restart the phone without your SIM card so there will be no running phone tasks in the background. Now you can have up to 3,5 MB of free RAM! Note: ironically enough, Flight mode doesn't work when Smart Launcher is installed, at least in my case. But i've also heard several reports of people who have both apps running without any problems. >>> Method 2: Smart Launcher trick: Install Smart Launcher and open it. Go to Options, Settings and put Launcher ON. Now plug in your charger and switch off your phone. Wait untill the battery meter appears and short press the Menu button (don't hold). The menu should appear and now you can have 3,5 to 4,5 MB free RAM! (Hold Menu button to check RAM). The trick is that with the charger plugged in, the phone must get a minimum software support for charging, even when the phone is switched off. And somehow Smart Launcher has still got it's shortcut running and that's the Menu button. So when you press the Menu button, you go directly to the Menu without any other phone tasks running in the background so you trick the phone and you have more free RAM! Note: when you unplug the charger, the phone will switch off

I have tested this with my D807 and it works.

1. If you have changed your phone password, change your password back to the default 8 zeros (00000000).
1a. NOTE (Modification here by my experience): Goto SETTINGS, SECURITY, then SIM LOCK and disable this before proceeding.
2. Put a SIM card that is from a network other than the one your phone is locked to (I used a TMOBILE card from my buddy Darin)
3. When Incorrect SIM (I got invalid card and there was a sim card graphic spinning) error comes up, type *#9998*3323#.
4. White screen will appear with an exit option. Press the right softkey. (I ended up pushing the down key to get a menu)
5. From the menu that appears, select the Malloc Fail option. This will reboot the phone and the normal service screens will appear.
6. Type *0141# and then press the green call key. "Personalization" or "Personalized" will appear.
7. Turn off your phone and put the original SIM back in.
8. Turn on your phone. You will receive a prompt to enter a password.
9. Type 8 zeros (00000000) (This is because the SIM LOCK Mentioned earlier gets switched back on)
10. Completed. You have now unlocked your phone.

I was speaking with a Sony Ericsson development tech today and he's given me some great codes!!

Write down your IMEI number. You can get this with the following:

*#06#

Then, you need to get into the Personalize menu with the following keypress:

< ** <

(Left, Star,Star, Left)

You then will need to select the Network at the top ( This will be locked )

It will ask for the code (the one that everyone asks for) and you need to enter in the following:

7993XXXX (where XXXX is the FIRST FOUR digits of your IMEI Number)

It will report an error and reduce your lock count by 1. Don't worry about this.

Repeat the process and enter the following:

6309XXXX ( where XXXX is the SECOND FOUR digits of your IMEI Number)

Again, it will reduce by one. Repeat again with the next two numbers:

093167XX ( where XX is the 9th and 10th digits of your IMEI Number)
323343XX ( where XX is the 11th and 12th digits of your IMEI Number)

And finally, you will need to repeat the process just one more time. This is very important, you will need to enter the following code:

XXXXYYYY - Where XXXX is the SECOND FOUR digits of your IMEI and YYYY is the FIRST FOUR digits of your IMEI.

You have to be careful, there are a few steps to follow, but these are the codes that the technicians use to unlock and test the phones that they have in for R & D.

I was very excited when I got these and it worked perfectly. I have unlocked two phones now, both K608i - One that was with Optus (Australia) and the other with Three (Australia) without any problem

YOU can use iDEN phones Like boost and nextel tethered to your laptop or computer for free internet. It isnt really at great speeds, but it is also free. Not sure if it will stay that way forever, but the last time I chaced it is still working. If you have Widen enabled it will go a touch faster too.

All you need to do is create a new dial up connection.

(You will also need the usb cable to connect the phone to the computer)

The access number is S=2#777. you need to make sure the phone and the connection baud rate is set at 115200.

You can put anything you like for a username and password (I usually use Admin, Password for these)

Then after you make the new connection, under the networking tab click the settings button and uncheck every box except for enable software compression.

That is about it, just plug the phone to the PC and connect using the connection. it will connect at 115.2 Kbps. and I have had download speeds up to around 40 - 50 Kbps
